TRACKSIDE
Ballast Condition Surveys
(high resolution)
Variations in ballast thickness and condition cause problems for track stability and safety. Uneven settlement and ballast wear is rapidly accentuated under changing loads and can cause sudden failure. Zetica’s high resolution surveys find these causes and help you predict problems before they occur.
Zetica uses GPR on road-rail (up to 20mph) or trolley platforms with targeted sampling to:
- map ballast pockets
- detect changes in ballast condition due to water content
- find perched water tables within ballast, check that layering of new ballast is correct
- locate sub-ballast irregularities and ensure that the correct ballast renewal limits are defined saving unnecessary expenditure
- quality control new ballast renewals

Features
- Scanning below wooden and concrete sleepers
- Scanning between sleepers at centimetre resolution
- Multi-profiles in a single pass for building lateral cross sections
- Integrated track video, thermal infra-red and ballast sampling
- High productivity GPR so Auto Ballast Sampling can be included in a single line possession
- Results easily integrated with track geometry data
