If you are developing a former military site such as an airfield, there is a chance that Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and other buried hazards may be present.
Typically sites such as former military airfields may have UXO in discrete areas often associated with other waste such as aircraft parts. Knowing where these areas are is difficult to determine even with historical research or a detailed ground investigation.
If you do come across them during construction, there is a safety implication (from UXO or radioactive radium associated with aircraft components), and the potential for long delays.
With Zetica’s ZDAS system, we can map the following in a single sweep:-
- Unexploded Ordnance.
- Buried structures such as existing foundations, underground storage tanks or bunkers.
- Unknown below-ground infrastructure (utility apparatus).
- Buried archaeology.
- Landfills, burial pits, and areas of Made Ground.
- Changes in soil resistivity which can inform the requirement for cathodic protection design.
- Confirmation of the location of known utilities (existing pipelines/cable routes).
Utilising our towed geophysical platform and data acquisition system (ZDAS) we can survey up to 8ha a day which means that covering an entire airfield is now conducted in a handful of days rather than weeks.
The ZDAS survey fills in gaps between boreholes or trial pits which means you get a much more representative measure of changes in underground conditions.
The ZDAS survey results are provided as a colour coded interpretative AutoCAD drawing (see left) which you can use to make an informed decision to avoid potential hazards or proactively investigate them prior to construction.
